The M/V Monhegan is a truly unique vessel with a long history of service. Launched for the Maine State Ferry Service in 1959, she was originally designed for carrying 8 cars and 149 passengers on her expansive main deck. She began her service as the sole vessel of Cape Cod Canal Cruises in May 2023. Despite its small size, Nantucket welcomes you with many lodging opportunities. From upscale resorts to historic inns to hotels to bed and breakfasts to house rentals, the island offers a variety of options. Due to the island’s popularity, however, it is advisable to book your room on Nantucket in advance.

The island of Nantucket solidified its place in history hundreds of years ago.
Live Music Cruise
The “up island” towns of Menemsha, Chilmark and Aquinnah are quaint, quiet places reminiscent of the island’s maritime past. The island of Martha’s Vineyard is a beautiful island with so much to see and do it’s no wonder it is a popular destination. Built in 1954 at Blount Marine, the Viking joined the Hy-Line fleet in 1979 as the sole vessel in our Cape Cod Canal Cruises division. In June 2023, she moved to her new home in Hyannis and now operates Hyannis Harbor Cruises. Built in 2016 at Gladding-Heam Shipbuilding, Grey Lady IV is the newest vessel of the Hy-Line fleet.

They offer bottom fishing trips for scup and black sea bass, along with Captain's Choice trips for whatever the captain thinks will be the best fishing. Nicknamed “The Little Grey Lady of the Sea” the quaint island of Nantucket is located thirty miles south of Cape Cod and is just a quick 1-hour trip aboard our high-speed ferries.

Sometimes it felt like we were holding our collective breath, eyes closed, and just pushing through all of the hard until it was over.
This high-speed catamaran operates between Hyannis and Nantucket.
From the mid-1700s to the late 1830s, Nantucket was the whaling capital of the world. It was home to whaleships plying the oceans of the world on three-, four-, and five-year voyages in pursuit of whales, being the primary business of the island and its economy. Built in 1977 at Breaux Baycraft of Loreauville, LA, Sea Queen II has been in the Hy-Line fleet since 2000. Hy-Line started deep-sea fishing from the Ocean Street Dock in 1966. Built in 2007 at Yank Marine Boatbuilding, Vineyard Lady was originally operated out of Sheepshead Bay, NY until 2015 when she was acquired by Hy-Line. She is an aluminum built catamaran and primarily runs high-speed service between Hyannis and Martha’s Vineyard.
Reservations are the only way to guarantee available space. Please arrive at least 45 minutes prior to departure to allow for drop-off, parking and ticketing. Once you step off the ferry, you will feel like you have been transported back in time.
Hy-Line Cruises
It was with heavy hearts that we had to cancel the Hyannis Harbor Cruise for the 2022 season. This is the service that started the company in 1962 by brothers Richard and Robert Scudder. We committed to run Cape Cod Canal Cruises on M/V Viking with a late season start of July 1st.
(Check out our Nantucket ferry schedule here!) The island is simply a natural beauty and easy to navigate during your visit as it is only 14-miles long and 3 ½-miles wide. Hy-Line Cruises also operates seasonal sightseeing cruises in and around Hyannis Harbor, and the Cape Cod Canal, (the latter sailing from the Wareham village of Onset). The demand for travel during this event was excessive, to put it mildly. If you hadn’t made a reservation at least weeks, if not months, in advance you were left with very little choice in your travel options. We were being asked if we were adding more boats, but there were not enough boats, hours in the day, or staff. We are always watching the weather in this business and that afternoon did not look promising.
We are proud and humbled by their effort and commitment to the Hy-Line family. As winter turned to spring, it was time for tough conversations and decisions. Considering the employment struggles that were a pandemic tailwind effect, it was clear that our Canal Cruise and Harbor Cruise would be significantly affected. The reality was that we would only have one vessel for two services in two completely different locations. “Pivot” seems to be the COVID buzzword and that’s exactly what was necessary.

The company's main office is located at 22 Channel Point Road in Hyannis. Hy-Line Cruises operates high-speed catamaran ferry service between Hyannis and Nantucket (year-round) and Hyannis and Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard (seasonally). The company also operates seasonal inter-island trips between Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
Or maybe it’s the historic buildings, some of which date back to the late 1600s. With its unspoiled charm and natural beauty, it is easy to see why so many travelers flock here year after year. If you’re staying for a few nights, you’ll want to take the time to really explore every town and its unique atmosphere and attractions.
All of them have amazing natural beauty, wonderful food, and fun things to do. The beaches on Martha’s Vineyard are unmatched, and there is amazing shopping, history and fun for all ages around every corner. Cruises 2/3 the distance of the 3-hour sightseeing cruise to the Herring Run and returns.
A wonderful resource is Nantucket Visitor Services, which keeps a weekly record of lodging available (please note this is for all accommodations except house rentals). In each town there are plenty of options including hotels, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds, vacation rentals, and even houseboat rentals for those looking for a really unique experience. A really good resource for an extensive list of options is the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber website where you can search by type of accommodation and also by town. The best way to see the memorable sights and beauty of Hyannis is by the sea. Relax and enjoy the views as your guide explains the various points of interest you see along the way.
To answer that, we should first explain the layout of the island. Martha’s Vineyard is a larger island, consisting of six towns with magnificent coastlines. The six towns of the island retain their own character and style. The “down island” towns of Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown are shopping havens with attractions and restaurants to suit every taste.
